This week in Reception, we’ve had an exciting time exploring repeating patterns in Maths! The children have creatively engaged with patterns using a variety of materials, from colorful fruit to natural objects found outdoors. They’ve even used their bodies to create dynamic action patterns! It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they experimented with different ways to form patterns. Each activity has brought lots of laughter and learning, making the concept of repeating patterns both fun and memorable. What were some of their favorite patterns to create?

In Dove class @FP we have been writing our own stories around the book ‘You Choose fairy tales’ by Nick Sherratt. The children story mapped and chose their own characters, baddies, settings and problems, then went on to write their own stories which will be displayed outside our classroom.

In Maths we have been looking at part whole, where we start with a number and the children split it into two parts. Please ask your children about part whole and encourage them to explain what they have to do.

For black history month the children have been learning about Mary Seacole and writing their own information books about her.

Parents if you are able to access bug clubs a computer or a tab, your child’s login details are inside the front cover of their reading record and I will shortly be adding their Numbots login details. The children can earn certificates for engaging on both.

In YR6 Eagle class @FP, we have been exploring the fascinating and dramatic stories of Henry VIII’s six wives, delving into the political, social and personal implications of each marriage. 

Through engaging lessons, we have learnt about the lives of Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr.  We investigated the reasons behind Henry’s quest for a male heir, the impact of the Reformation, and the historical context of the Tudor dynasty.

We embarked on an exciting project where we imagined ourselves as courtiers writing letters to King Henry VIII, urging him to change his diet.  We learned about the lavish feasts and extravagant foods he enjoyed, and we researched how his eating habits affected his health.  With this knowledge, we crafted persuasive letters, carefully choosing our words to appeal to the king’s interests.  It was fascinating to think about the importance of food in Tudor times and how a balanced diet could impact not just Henry’s health but also his reign.

In Pelican class @FP, we have had a busy and exciting three weeks!

Reading: The children have been reading, ‘Llama Out Loud’, a story about Yasmin Shah is a ten-year-old girl who is part of a big, noisy family and doesn’t ever speak. Levi is a rude, sassy toy llama, who talks A LOT, and has come to wreak havoc in Yasmin’s life. Yasmin tries everything she can to escape Levi, but she can’t help being dragged along on his crazy antics.  The children are really enjoying this chapter book and exploring the skills of inference, predication and retrieval of information in order to develop their comprehension.

In English we have been exploring what it means to be a writer and writing for different purposes.  Year three are currently taking part in part the ‘wonderful world of Young Writers’, Little Dreamers competition.  Please hold this space – as we hope to come back with some winning poetry writing.  With Parents permission any successful entries will be published in a book for Parents, friends and family to buy.

In maths we continue to explore the value of each digit within a number. For example, the 5 in 350 represents 5 tens, or 50; however, the 5 in 5,006 represents 5 thousand, or 5,000.

In Science we have been learning about nutrition, the study of food and how it works in your body.

In Music we a currently exploring the use of notes and timing using the untune drum and the tune instrument of a xylophone.

We have been learning about Pablo Picasso and looking at his art. We then made our own collage faces similar to his style. What do you think?

In Kestrel class @FP, the children have been learning about Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso and have practised using continuous line in their drawing. Continuous line is when the artist, for example Pablo Picasso, either doesn’t take their pen, pencil or brush off the page. The work is created using one continuous line that isn’t broken until the end. Continuous line can also be used in wire work, like the artwork of Alexander Calder. It allows the artist to work quickly and freely, meaning that they take more creative risks!

In Parakeet class @FP, we have been writing our own poems. We went for a nature walk to begin with to inspire us. We used our senses to write notes on what we could see, hear and touch. We then used adjectives to describe what we saw and wrote this into our poems.

 

In art we have been learning all about Pablo Picasso. We have been learning all about cubism and drew portraits using the cubism style. How amazing is our art?

 

We are continuing our Stone Age learning in history and have looked at hunter gatherers and cave art. This week we are learning about the food sStone Age people ate and the weapons they used. We are looking forward to having visitors into school to talk about the Stone Age in a workshop and visiting Chislehurst Caves.

The children, in Hummingbird class @FP, we have been busy learning how to write acrostic poems about us! It has been really tricky but we have persevered and look at what we have written! 

We have been learning about our rights and responsibilities as writers too. 

In gymnastics we have been learning about different rolls. We are becoming experts in the James Bond roll, Wonder Woman roll and teddy bear roll! 

We have really enjoyed our first few weeks in Year 2! 

Year 5 Falcon class @ FP have been making salt dough prototypes in DT, for our jewellery designs. We've been using Ancient Greek patterns as inspiration and reflecting on what changes we need to make to improve.  

 

Earlier in the week we had the chance to look at some Ancient Greek replica artefacts, which has been helping to generate even more ideas!

 

This week, Year 1/2 Heron class @FP have been learning about levers and sliders in DT. We learned about what they are and how they work, and then discussed how we can use them in our DT project to make moving toys. We then went out into the school to find real-life examples of both sliders and levers, and the children found so many! Great job, Heron heroes.
